Project: KGP and Pluto LNG Facility Digital Radio Upgrades
Industry: Oil & Gas
Location: Karratha, Western Australia

The Client

Woodside is Australia’s largest independent oil and gas company, recognised for its global capabilities as an explorer, developer, producer and supplier of energy.

Woodside’s facilities include the Karratha Gas Plant (KGP) and the Pluto LNG Plant, two of the most advanced, integrated gas production systems in the world, where LNG, domestic gas, condensate and LPG is produced.

The Challenge

Woodside was restricted by an ageing analogue network that was nearing end of life and limited in safety and efficiency features. They were looking for infrastructure and equipment that could:

  • Meet current operational requirements, that could be scaled to accommodate more talk groups
  • Support emergency calling and duress notifications
  • Be integrated into a modern dispatch console system for centralised communications management
  • Provide the latest call and data features for mobile fleets
  • Provide better security via a digital platform

To support the facility expansion, Woodside engaged CSE Crosscom to upgrade existing P25 and analogue trunked systems to Motorola Digital DIMETRA networks.

The Solution

To support the consolidation of two ageing radio systems, CSE Crosscom engineered a TETRA digital radio solution using the Motorola DIMETRA technology.

In designing the solution, CSE Crosscom considered the latest Australian industry compliance standards such as ATEX and IECEx rating for intrinsically safe operation, high duty cycles, long lasting battery life, and ability to remotely disable misplaced hand held radios.

The nature of Woodside’s operation required scalability to support future growth and ad hoc shut down periods where personnel would triple on such occasions. CSE Crosscom streamlined the rapid onboarding of personnel and management of dedicated talk groups via scalable radio technology and supply of pre-programmed radio fleet maps for maximum flexibility.

The CSE Crosscom solution included design, design documentation, construction, and commissioning of the DIMETRA trunked digital radio network with the following key components:

  • TETRA Core
  • TETRA Sites
  • Dispatch Consoles and Integration

CSE Crosscom continues to work alongside Woodside to provide support and product services.
